When You Represent Yourself in Legal Matters, Attention to Detail Matters

There are many people who decide to represent themselves in civil legal matters. They file the motion, they conduct their own investigation and present their case. You can do this too. The main reason why people do this is the cost. You'll spend a lot less money when you do the work yourself. While you will still have filing fees and other charges that come with your case, they are far less than what you would spend to hire an attorney. However, before you embark on this endeavor, make sure that you are ready for the challenge.

The right documents are vital

Be sure that you have the right legal documents.

If you need documents for wage garnishments, qualified domestic relations orders {QDRO'S}, child support, uncontested divorce or any other legal matter, do your research as to which documents you need.

One missing document can send you all the way back to the beginning.

Check your paperwork and then check it again

Once your documents are filled out, check them, and then check them again. Make sure that you haven't skipped anything. Make sure your dates are correct, and make sure everything is signed. Be sure that anything that must be signed in front of a notary has been signed. If you make a mistake, you'll have to start again. You'll be wasting time.

Time is of the essence

A lot of people say time is of the essence when they want you to hurry up and get things done quickly. However, when the court gives you a time, they mean it. If you have a certain number of days to file something, it has to be done within that time frame. If you have a certain number of days to answer the court, those are the days you have. The court isn't going to remind you. You are representing yourself, so think like a lawyer and follow the rules to the letter.

You can do this. Many others have done it before you, and many more will after you. You just have to be prepared and stay on top of things. Make sure your documents are in order and that they are the correct ones, and make sure that you are on time with everything. It can feel overwhelming at times, but once your case is over, you'll feel good that you were able to handle it and save money.
